Apple has finally put an iPhone on both sides of a hinge, but the iPhone Duo is much more expensive than a normal flagship upgrade.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone starts at ₹2,99,900 in India and $1,999 in the US, putting it firmly in ultra-premium territory. In return, buyers get a 7.6-inch folding OLED display, a smaller 5.4-inch outer screen, the A20 Pro processor, up to 2TB of storage and an iOS 27 experience designed specifically for using two screens and multiple device positions.

The bigger question is whether those changes are useful enough to justify spending nearly ₹3 lakh on a phone.

For now, that question cannot be answered with a final review. Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, but pre-orders do not begin until October 16, with general availability scheduled for October 23.

For readers who want to check Apple’s information directly:

Two Screens Change How the iPhone Works

The most important specification is not simply the size of the inner display. It is how Apple expects people to move between the two screens.

Closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer OLED display with a 1398 × 2034 resolution. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch OLED panel with a 1878 × 2670 resolution.

Both support ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, HDR and a claimed outdoor peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Apple has also given the internal screen a nano-texture finish intended to reduce reflections.

That large inner screen creates room for something conventional iPhones have never offered in quite the same way: proper side-by-side app use.

With iOS 27, users can place two apps next to each other, open separate windows from supported apps and save useful app pairings. That could make the Duo particularly interesting for email, research, travel planning, document work and other tasks where repeatedly jumping between apps becomes tedious.

The inner screen also changes how the phone can physically be used. Partially folding the device allows it to stand at different angles rather than forcing the user to either hold it or place it flat.

A 254g Phone Is a Significant Commitment

The benefit of carrying a small tablet-like display comes with a physical cost.

The iPhone Duo weighs 254g. When unfolded, it measures just 5.2mm thick, but closing the two halves brings its thickness to 11.3mm.

For comparison, Samsung lists the 2026 Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201g, despite also using a 7.6-inch main display. Samsung’s Fold8 is therefore considerably lighter on paper.

That difference matters because foldables are carried as phones far more often than they are used as tablets. A device can look exceptionally thin while open yet still feel substantial in a pocket once its two halves are closed.

The Duo’s compact 5.4-inch outer display also takes a different approach from increasingly phone-like foldables. Some buyers may appreciate the smaller footprint; others may prefer a larger cover screen that requires unfolding the device less frequently.

This is an area where specification sheets alone cannot settle the question. Long-term comfort needs real-world use.

A20 Pro Provides the Processing Foundation

Inside is Apple’s A20 Pro, the same processor generation used in the iPhone 18 Pro family.

Apple specifies a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The company says the chip is manufactured using a 2nm process and provides substantial CPU, GPU and AI improvements over A19 Pro.

Those performance percentages should currently be treated as Apple’s claims, rather than independent benchmark results.

What matters more for the Duo is sustained performance. Foldable devices divide internal space across two thin halves, making cooling more difficult than simply placing components inside a conventional slab phone.

Apple has therefore paired A20 Pro with a custom vapour-chamber cooling system. Whether that translates into consistently strong gaming and heavy multitasking performance will be something independent testing needs to establish after release.

The Camera System Is More Restrained Than the Price Suggests

For photography, the iPhone Duo pairs two 48MP rear cameras: a primary shooter for everyday use and a second 48MP ultra-wide for fitting more into the frame.

The main sensor can also provide a 2x optical-quality crop, giving users 0.5x, 1x and 2x framing options without adding a dedicated telephoto camera.

That distinction is worth noticing on a phone costing almost ₹3 lakh.

Apple has concentrated some of the camera innovation around the foldable design instead. The outer display can act as a preview when another person is being photographed, while users can take selfies using the higher-resolution rear cameras.

There is also an under-display FaceTime camera beneath the internal screen, along with a separate 12MP Center Stage front-camera system.

Until independent camera testing becomes available, it would be premature to judge image quality against the iPhone 18 Pro Max or competing foldables.

Apple Pencil Support Makes the Inner Screen More Interesting

One unexpected addition is Apple Pencil support.

Apple’s technical information lists compatibility with the Apple Pencil (USB-C), while its launch material says Pencil functionality is intended to support tasks such as notes, drawing and document markup.

That makes the 7.6-inch display potentially more useful for productivity than a simple enlarged iPhone interface.

It is not equivalent to carrying a full-size iPad, but someone who already uses Apple’s Notes, Files, Mail and productivity ecosystem could find value in having a larger workspace without carrying a second device.

Battery Life Uses Two Physical Batteries

Apple has placed a battery in each side of the device and manages the pair as one power system.

The company claims up to:

  • 44 hours of video playback using the outer display
  • 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
  • 24 hours of typical mixed usage

Apple also says the phone can reach 50% charge in about 20 minutes using a suitable 60W or higher wired adapter, or roughly 30 minutes with compatible MagSafe hardware. These are manufacturer-rated figures and should not be read as independent battery-test results.

MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging are supported at up to 25W.

Touch ID Returns in an Unusual Place in the iPhone Lineup

Instead of Face ID being the only biometric option, Apple has built the iPhone Duo’s fingerprint reader directly into the side button, making it easy to reach whether the phone is folded or open.

That approach makes practical sense on a device that can be opened, closed or positioned at different angles. A side-mounted fingerprint sensor remains accessible in several orientations without requiring a specific screen to face the user.

It is one of several examples where Apple has changed familiar iPhone hardware conventions to accommodate the foldable design.

No Physical SIM Slot

The iPhone Duo is an eSIM-only device globally.

Apple lists support for dual active eSIMs and storage for eight or more eSIM profiles. There is no physical SIM-card compatibility.

That is important for frequent travellers and buyers in markets where eSIM support differs by carrier.

Apple says more than 500 carriers globally support eSIM, but buyers should still confirm compatibility with their specific operator before purchasing.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8: Two Different Approaches

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series is the obvious comparison because Samsung already has years of experience selling book-style foldables.

The 2026 Galaxy Z Fold8 also uses a 7.6-inch internal screen, but Samsung lists a 5.5-inch cover display and a much lower 201g weight. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and uses a 4,800mAh battery.

The iPhone Duo takes a different route.

Apple is relying heavily on integration with iOS, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Intelligence and the wider Apple ecosystem. Buyers already invested in those products may therefore evaluate the Duo very differently from someone choosing between foldable hardware in isolation.

Real-world use will matter more than specifications here, so it is still too soon to judge which design feels more practical over a full day. What is already clear is that Apple entering the category gives consumers another major foldable platform rather than simply another Android hardware design.

iPhone Duo Price and Release Date

Apple has confirmed a ₹2,99,900 starting price in India for the 256GB model.

Storage options are:

  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB
  • 2TB

Apple is offering the iPhone Duo in a choice of Star White or Night Sky, giving buyers one lighter and one darker finish.

In the United States, pricing begins at $1,999.

Pre-orders open on October 16, 2026, with sales starting October 23 in India, the US and more than 70 initial markets.

Apple says another group of countries will receive the device from October 30.

What Buyers Should Keep in Mind Before Pre-Ordering

The iPhone Duo is unquestionably one of Apple’s most significant hardware changes in years, but being new does not automatically make it the best choice for every iPhone buyer.

Three things deserve particular attention.

First is the ₹2,99,900 entry price. This is not positioned as an ordinary flagship upgrade.

Second is weight. At 254g, it is substantially heavier than Samsung’s 201g Galaxy Z Fold8.

Third is the camera configuration. Buyers paying this much may want to compare the Duo’s dual rear-camera setup carefully with Apple’s own Pro phones and competing premium foldables.

On the other hand, the 7.6-inch display, iOS multitasking, Apple Pencil support and deep integration with Apple’s existing ecosystem make the Duo something Apple has never offered before.

The real test begins after October 23, when battery endurance, hinge durability, inner-screen behaviour, thermal performance, cameras and long-term ergonomics can be assessed outside a controlled launch environment.

For now, the iPhone Duo looks less like a replacement for every iPhone and more like a new branch of the lineup aimed at people who genuinely want a phone and larger workspace in one device.

THE ITECHVORA TAKE

Apple iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo is built for Apple users who want tablet-like screen space without carrying a second device. Its large folding display, A20 Pro hardware and iOS multitasking give it a clear productivity angle, but the $1,999 entry price, 254g weight and absence of a dedicated telephoto lens make it a very considered purchase rather than an automatic upgrade.

How we tested

This assessment is based on research rather than hands-on iTechVora testing. Technical details have been checked against manufacturer documentation, with outside sources used only where additional verified context was needed.

What we like

  • The 7.6-inch folding screen creates considerably more room for multitasking than a standard iPhone display.
  • Both screens can dynamically adjust their refresh rate and reach up to 120Hz through ProMotion.
  • At the heart of the phone, the A20 Pro pairs six CPU cores with seven GPU cores, while two 16-core Neural Engines handle AI-related processing.
  • An IP68 rating gives the Duo a stronger dust-and-water protection specification than buyers might expect from a folding phone.
  • Two 48MP rear sensors cover the standard and ultrawide perspectives without dropping resolution on the wider camera.
  • Support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes the larger inner screen more useful for notes, annotations and document work.
  • Compatible MagSafe or Qi2 hardware can supply wireless charging at rates reaching 25W.
  • USB 3 connectivity allows wired data transfers at speeds of up to 10Gbps.
  • Storage choices extend to 2TB for users who keep large photo, video or work libraries on-device.
  • iOS 27 introduces software behaviour designed specifically around the Duo’s larger folding workspace and multitasking layout.

What to consider

  • A $1,999 starting price puts the Duo well beyond the cost of a typical flagship smartphone.
  • At 254g, this is a noticeably heavy phone and weighs more than several competing foldables.
  • Apple has not fitted a separate telephoto camera; the 2x option is produced from the 48MP main sensor instead.
  • There is no slot for a physical SIM card, so cellular service must be activated through eSIM.
  • The retail box provides the USB-C cable, but buyers need to supply or purchase a compatible wall charger separately.
  • Apple provides battery-life estimates but does not state the battery capacity in milliamp-hours.
  • There is currently no published fixed-year commitment specifying how long the Duo will receive major iOS releases or security updates.
  • Hinge longevity, sustained battery behaviour, heat management and camera consistency are areas that will become clearer once independent reviewers have used the phone extensively outside launch conditions.
