How to use
Enter the diagonals in inches, select each aspect ratio and choose inches or centimeters for the measurements. Phone presets use portrait orientation. Green represents A; purple represents B, with all measurements also available as text.
Methodology
Width = diagonal × a / √(a² + b²). Height = diagonal × b / √(a² + b²). Area = width × height. Percentage area change = (area A / area B − 1) × 100. One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters.
Worked example
At 16:9, a 65-inch display has about 39.67% more screen area than a 55-inch display, despite a diagonal increase of only 18.18%. Aspect ratio can change that relationship substantially.
Limitations
These are rectangular visible-screen estimates. Bezels, curved surfaces, rounded corners and camera cutouts are not modeled. Marketing terms such as “21:9” can be approximate; exact pixel ratios may differ. This compares physical size, not image quality or pixel density.
FAQ
Can I compare a phone with a laptop?
Yes. Use a portrait phone ratio for one screen and a landscape ratio for the other. Both use the same physical scale.
Does a larger diagonal always mean more area?
Only when the aspect ratios match. A long, narrow screen can have less area than a more square screen of similar diagonal.
