How to use

Enter the file size, its unit, and your connection speed. Choose the usable percentage of that speed. If you already know the measured download rate, use 100% to avoid applying the same slowdown twice.

Methodology

Time in seconds = file size in bytes × 8 / (connection speed in bits per second × efficiency). Decimal KB, MB, GB and TB use powers of 1,000. Binary KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB use powers of 1,024. A byte contains eight bits. Mbps and MB/s are different units.

Worked example

120 GB at 200 Mbps takes 4,800 seconds, or 1 hour 20 minutes, at full speed. At 85% usable speed it takes approximately 1 hour 34 minutes 8 seconds. This arithmetic is precise; the real network estimate is not.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a constant transfer rate. Server throttling, Wi-Fi interference, protocol overhead, competing downloads, pauses and storage speed can affect the result. Game installation, decompression and patch processing are excluded. Displayed times round upward to whole seconds.

FAQ

Why is 200 Mbps not 200 MB/s?

Divide bits per second by eight: 200 Mbps equals 25 MB/s before losses.

Why does GiB take longer than GB?

One GiB contains 1,073,741,824 bytes; one GB contains 1,000,000,000 bytes.
